-Nascimento e desenvolvimento aparentemente normais até possivelmente os 18 meses;
-Diminuição do crescimento da cabeça;
-Perda temporária do contato social (semelhante e frequentemente confundida com crianças autistas);
-Movimentos estereotipados das mãos, como bater palmas, lavar as mãos, esfregá-las ou levá-las até a boca;
-Perda gradual do uso funcional das mãos;
-Perda ou não aquisição da fala;
-Desvio de coluna;
-Dificuldade para andar quando a marcha está preservada;
-Comunicação predominantemente pelo olhar.
Além destes sintomas, podem ocorrer nos primeiros anos: hipotonia, constipação intestinal, crises convulsivas, bruxismo e distúrbios respiratórios. E ao longo da vida: refluxo gastroesofágico, pés pequenos, extremidades frias, atrofia muscular tardia e espasticidade tardia.
