A otoneurologia está relacionada com o diagnóstico e tratamento do desequilíbrio corporal e suas correlações. O equilíbrio corporal do ser humano depende das informações do labirinto (localizado na orelha interna), da visão e de outras partes do corpo (pele, músculos e articulações), que são recebidas e organizadas pelo cérebro, quando estas informações são conflitantes, o resultado é a tontura.
A tontura é um termo genérico que representa todas as manifestações de desequilíbrio, entre elas temos, por exemplo, a vertigem, caracterizada por uma sensação de rotação.
O paciente com tontura pode referir outros sintomas e apresentar náuseas, vômitos, suor, palidez, zumbido, diminuição da audição, fadiga física e mental. Isto ocorre por causa das relações entre o sistema do equilíbrio com a audição e outras funções do sistema nervoso central.
O desequilíbrio corporal pode ocorrer por alterações funcionais nas diversas estruturas do sistema vestibular ou ser determinado por problemas clínicos à distância em outros órgãos ou sistemas, que podem afetá-lo de diferentes maneiras.
Atualmente, a avaliação otoneurológica é composta por várias etapas e é capaz de diagnosticar possíveis problemas no labirinto. O fonoaudiólogo é o profissional responsável pela realização de alguns dos exames para investigação da tontura e além disso, quando há indicação médica, realiza o tratamento por meio de terapia específica.
